In June, a GCRMN regional workshop on regional data analysis of coral monitoring for the East Asia region was organized in Malaysia with funding from the Government of Japan. 46 participants from 16 countries and states attended the workshop and agreed to support the GCRMN’s global analysis by providing their data.

NOAA Coral Reef Watch outreach training was also organized by Jacqueline de la Cour and collaborative work between NOAA, GCRMN East Asia and the IOC Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific (WESTPAC) has been planned for a coral bleaching assessment for 2019. Additionally GCRMN East Asia members convened as a Steering Committee for the Asia Pacific Coral Reef Society (APCoRS) to discuss their registration as an international NGO.

The 3-day workshop ended full of appreciation for the University of Malaya, Malaysian Society of Marine Science and the Japanese Ministry of the Environment for their warm hospitality and kind support.
