Countries included

In the global coral status report, “Southeast Asia” and “East and North Asia” Nodes were different. However, since 2001, both Nodes have been working together as the wider region of “East Asia”, because of this the decision was made to call this area the “East Asia Region” (combining the “Southeast Asia Node” and “East and North Asia Node”).
This new region encompasses 14 countries and states:
East and North Asia (Node) 5 countries and states: China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea
Southeast Asia (Node) 9 countries: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Governance

Japan Wildlife Research Center and National Parks Board of Singapore took the lead of coordination for the East Asia region with financial support from Japan’s Ministry of Environment. The region published the ‘Status of Coral Reefs in East Asian Seas Region’ in 2004, 2010, 2014 and 2018. The aim is to provide more detailed information on the coral reef condition in a region that has the world’s richest coral reef biodiversity and also the highest threats. Another key role of this region is to organize the international conference of coral scientists called ‘Asia Pacific Coral Reef Symposium (APCRS)’ every 4 years since 2006 as a venue for sharing information and knowledge on coral reef research and management.
