The Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN) editorial team has officially commenced work on the production of the Status of Coral Reefs of the World: 2025 report, following a highly successful data collation process initiated in May 2024. During their first editorial team meeting, members outlined the roadmap for the report’s production, reinforcing their commitment to delivering a comprehensive global assessment of coral reef health.

Bringing together experts from the GCRMN, including the ICRI Secretariat, the host institution, AIMS, and highly experienced individuals, the editorial team includes:

  • Tom Dallison (ICRI) – Team Lead
  • Britta Schaffelke (AIMS / Global Coordinator)
  • Francis Staub (ICRI)
  • Jeremy Wicquart (GCRMN)
  • Erica Towle (NOAA)
  • Serge Planes (CNRS)
  • Amanda Brigdale (AIMS)

Discussions centred on the progress of the GCRMN global database, which now holds over 21 million observations from 29,000 sites worldwide. The team also reviewed timelines, data gaps, and the report’s quality assurance process, ensuring credible a report. The report is scheduled for release in 2026, with launch date to be confirmed, with regional contributions playing a key role in shaping its findings.

A strong emphasis was placed on coordination and collaboration, with team members working to engage regional networks and refine the data analysis methods. Moving forward, efforts will focus on integrating regional data, finalising chapter templates, and maintaining clear communication with contributors.

The Status of Coral Reefs of the World: 2025 will provide critical insights into the state of global reefs, guiding conservation efforts and policy decisions. Stay updated on the progress at www.gcrmn.net/2025-report.
