MERMAID, the open-source coral reef data platform led by the Wildlife Conservation Society, has announced a landmark development in reef monitoring governance: Indonesia has become the first government to adopt and integrate MERMAID into its national marine protected area infrastructure.

The news was shared in MERMAID’s latest newsletter, which also highlighted a series of platform updates relevant to reef monitoring practitioners across the GCRMN’s regional networks.

Indonesia Integrates MERMAID into National MPA Database

Indonesia’s Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries now pulls MERMAID data directly into SIDAKO, its national MPA database, via automated daily API calls. The integration draws on 23 years of monitoring records contributed by more than 35 universities, NGO, and government organisations, with 87% of Indonesia’s benthic survey data in SIDAKO now sourced through MERMAID.

For a nation that hosts the most biodiverse coral reefs on Earth, this represents a significant step towards real-time, government-level data flows informing management effectiveness across the Coral Triangle. It also demonstrates what is possible when standardised, interoperable data platforms are formally embedded within national governance structures.

Platform Updates Supporting Field Teams

MERMAID’s latest newsletter also highlights a number of practical developments for reef monitoring practitioners. A new personal demo project environment is now live, enabling teams to explore the platform’s data collection and analysis workflows before committing field data.

Official tutorial video series for both the Collect and Explore modules are also now available, covering everything from account setup to data export and sharing. Looking ahead, MERMAID has indicated that a new invertebrate survey method is in development, responding to user demand for tools to track macroinvertebrates as indicators of coastal fishery health and food security.

MERMAID and the GCRMN: Supporting Global Reef Assessment

The GCRMN’s mission depends on the aggregation of high-quality, comparable monitoring data from contributors across the GCRMN’s 10 regions. Data platforms that support standardised collection methods, transparent metadata, and interoperable outputs are directly aligned with the network’s emphasis on FAIR data principles and tiered data quality standards, as set out in the GCRMN Implementation and Governance Plan.

MERMAID is one of several platforms through which GCRMN data contributors collect, manage, and submit reef monitoring data. In the lead-up to the forthcoming Status of Coral Reefs of the World: 2025, MERMAID-managed data has been part of the broader regional data synthesis process that feeds the GCRMN’s global and regional assessments. A dedicated account of how MERMAID data has contributed to GCRMN regional reporting is available here: Turning Regional Data into Global Reports.

As the GCRMN works towards the publication of the Status of Coral Reefs of the World: 2025, the quality and interoperability of underlying monitoring data has never been more consequential.
