The seventh GCRMN Status of Coral Reefs of the World: 2025 is the product of a three-year endeavour to bring together monitoring efforts, expert advice, policy and communications guidance, coordination, and funding support from an extensive network of partners, contributors, scientists, and collaborators who form the broader GCRMN community. Their commitment to coral reef monitoring, research, and conservation is gratefully acknowledged.
The production of this milestone report was made possible by the voluntary contribution of data from over 87,000 surveys conducted across more than 36,000 coral reef sites in 123 reef-bearing countries, territories, and economies, over five decades (1973–2025). Together, this effort generated the largest coral reef benthic-cover monitoring dataset assembled to date.
We gratefully acknowledge all organisations that contributed data to this report and thank them for their essential role in making this assessment possible. The acknowledgements below include specific recognition of organisations for which acknowledgement provisions were included in the respective data sharing agreements. We would like to thank the Reef Check Foundation, and its volunteers who have spent countless hours collecting these data. We also thank the Government of Mozambique for graciously allowing the data collected in the country to be used to produce this report. We thank the Micronesia Coral Reef Monitoring Program, the Marshall Islands Marine Resources Authority, the Marshall Islands Conservation Society, and the College of the Marshall Islands for having shared coral reef monitoring data. We thank the National Center for Oceanographic Research, the Departments of Ocean Sciences, Human Sciences of the Sea, and Research Partnership and Valorization of Madagascar for having shared coral reef monitoring data. Finally, we thank the National Park Service from the Pacific Island Network Inventory and Monitoring Program for sharing their benthic monitoring database.
We also thank the ReefCloud and MERMAID platform teams for their support, particularly Samuel Chan for his help in compiling the ReefCloud datasets and Emily Darling, Kim Fisher, Sharla Gelfand, Amkieltiela Amkieltiela, and Alexandra Kler Lago for their valuable advice on using the MERMAID platform and the associated mermaidr R package. We thank the Coral Reef Watch team at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), particularly Blake Spady, Gang Liu, Graham Kolodziej, and Derek Manzello, for their valuable advice on using Coral Reef Watch products.
The GCRMN Regional Coordinators played a pivotal role in producing the report. We would like to thank and acknowledge their dedication, expertise, and countless hours contributed to the report by coordinating data contributions and expert advice, advising on data analysis, reviewing results, writing and proofreading regional chapters, and much more. Their contributions were essential and strengthened the scientific rigour and value of the report. We would like to thank Emma Kennedy, James Gilmour (Australia), Beatrice Padovani Ferreira, Ana Lidia Gaspar, Ana Paula Leite Prates (Brazil), Laëtitia Mathon, Andrea Rivera-Sosa, Melanie McField, Lucie Labbouz, Auriane Petit (Caribbean), Tadashi Kimura, Karenne Tun, Danwei Huang (East Asian Seas), Sonia Bejarano, Fernando Zapata (Eastern Tropical Pacific), Serge Planes (Pacific), Maher Amer (Red Sea and Gulf of Aden), John Burt, Rita Bento (ROPME Sea Area), Ahmad Ali Khan, Priyankari Alexander (South Asia), Karin Moejes, and David Obura (Western Indian Ocean).
In addition, we wish to thank Andrea Rivera-Sosa for her major support in collating Caribbean data; Ray Tong Jing for his work on collating and standardizing the East Asian Seas datasets; Andrea Arriaga Madrigal for her work in collating and standardizing Eastern Tropical Pacific data; Guilhem Banc-Prandi for connecting us with the coordinators of coral reef monitoring programs in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden; Rita Bento for her help in collating data from the ROPME Sea Area; and Swaleh Aboud, Erwan Sola, Rosario Viador, and Julien Wickel for their help in collating data from the Western Indian Ocean.
We extend our thanks to all participants in the online validation sessions and to those who attended the report workshop held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 7 to 13 February 2026. Their contributions to the discussion of modelling approaches and the interpretation of results greatly improved the report’s content. The workshop was facilitated and supported by the Australian Institute of Marine Science, and we would like to thank Violace Putri and Emily Maher specifically for their support in planning and the successful delivery of this event.
We also express our gratitude to the 218 authors who contributed content to this report, including chapters, boxes, and case studies, and for their assistance in the editing and proofreading of the content. Their support has been essential to the production of this report.
For the first time in the history of the GCRMN, this report has been peer-reviewed thanks to the generous contribution of the International Coral Reef Society (ICRS). The support of the society demonstrates how a strong collaboration between the GCRMN and the ICRS enabled the delivery of robust science to guide coral reef conservation efforts. The external scientific review was provided by Simon Harding and Christian R. Voolstra for the Introduction, Part 1 (Global status of coral reefs), and the Conclusion, and by Tom Shlesinger and Robert van Woesik for the Materials and Methods. On behalf of the broader GCRMN, we would like to warmly thank them for their contribution.
We thank Britta Schaffelke for her work coordinating the early stages of the reporting process and for her continued advice throughout the report’s production. The GCRMN Steering Committee provided substantial assistance, advice, and support, and we thank them all. The host of the GCRMN, the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS), is specifically thanked. The membership of the GCRMN Steering Committee comprises ICRI Host Secretariat (SHAMS) and GCRMN Global Coordinator (AIMS) as Co-Chairs, UN Environment, Non-government/technical ICRI members (WCS, WRI, CORDAP, GFCR), Major supporters of the GCRMN (USA: NOAA, France: Ministry of Overseas Territories, Ministry of Ecological and Inclusive Transition; UK: JNCC; Brazil: Ministry of Environment; Monaco: Centre Scientifique de Monaco), Representatives of Regional Networks (Western Indian Ocean, Caribbean, Pacific, East Asia, Brazil, Eastern Tropical Pacific), invited members such as leads of current Task Forces and the Host institution (AIMS).
The 40 members of the GCRMN Communications and Policy Task Force are also kindly thanked for their support throughout the dissemination of this report. The Communications and Policy Task Force was supported by: Margaux Monfared (Policy Strategist) and Gretchen Lyons (Communications Strategist) as Co-Chairs, ICRI Secretariat, GCRMN Editorial Team, UN Environment Programme, Science, Communications and Policy specialists (GFCR, MSC Foundation, IPBES, CRC, ICRS, Ocean and Climate Platform, Pepe Clarke, AIMS), Major supporters of the GCRMN (Bloomberg Ocean Fund, UK: JNCC; Monaco: Gouvernement Princier – Principauté de Monaco, Centre Scientifique de Monaco), and Representatives of Regional Networks (Australia, Western Indian Ocean, Caribbean, Pacific, East Asian Seas, Brazil, Eastern Tropical Pacific, South Asia, and ROPME Sea Area). We extend our sincere thanks to UNEP and the Global Fund for Coral Reefs for their support in enabling broader outreach.
Gouvernement Princier, Principauté de Monaco: The Government of the Principality of Monaco is joining forces with all of the ICRI’s partners to champion, in international forums, the messages on coral reef conservation and science-based policy. In this regard, the Monaco Scientific Centre (CSM) contributes to research into coral physiology, has been conducting controlled-environment coral cultivation since 1990, and is developing major projects such as the World Coral Conservatory.
Bloomberg Philanthropies Ocean Initiative: The Bloomberg Ocean Initiative works to protect and restore the world’s ocean by promoting ocean conservation, protecting resilient coral reef ecosystems, and reducing the practice of harmful and illegal overfishing. This work was made possible through the support of the Ocean Impact Partnership, a sponsored project of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors.
MSC Foundation: The MSC Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the MSC Group, advancing environmental, humanitarian and development initiatives worldwide by harnessing the Group’s global reach, unique knowledge of the sea and logistical expertise. Through science-based partnerships in conservation, marine science education and public engagement, the Foundation helps build the knowledge, collaboration and action needed to restore marine ecosystems and strengthen the resilience of coastal communities.

The GCRMN produces estimations regarding the status and trends of coral reefs using data acquired by the members of the GCRMN network. The data are collected following Data Sharing Agreements (DSA) with data contributors and as such the GCRMN is not the owner of datasets shared by its members. Therefore, for the “Status of Coral Reefs of the World: 2025” report, the GCRMN is unable to share the raw datasets. However, some members of the GCRMN network and report contributors have made their datasets publicly available. For benthic cover monitoring data, such open access datasets are listed here.
All code used to produce the results and figures presented in the “Status of Coral Reefs of the World: 2025” GCRMN report is openly available on a GitHub repository. This repository allows full reproducibility and transparency of the analyses.
