From 9 to 11 February 2026, the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN) will convene its Regional Coordinators and Editorial Team in Bangkok, Thailand, for a dedicated technical workshop supporting the development of the Status of Coral Reefs of the World: 2025 report.
The three-day workshop represents a critical milestone in the production of the global assessment, bringing together regional expertise from across the GCRMN network to review findings, strengthen coherence across regions, and shape the final structure, messages, and recommendations of the report.
Advancing regional assessments and global synthesis
The workshop is designed to consolidate regional and global analyses, ensuring that results are robust, well interpreted, and consistently presented. Participants will work collaboratively to review regional chapter findings, address outstanding questions, and agree on the next steps required to finalise regional assessments.
A central focus of the meeting will be the Global Synthesis, including the review of data analyses, visualisations, and emerging narratives that underpin the report’s global conclusions. Dedicated sessions will support the co-development of key messages, recommendations, and briefing materials intended to inform policy makers and practitioners.
From data to key messages
Structured across three thematic days, the agenda reflects the progression of the report itself. The first day focuses on regional review, allowing participants to examine results across regions and align approaches to interpretation and presentation. The second and third days shift to the global synthesis, with sessions dedicated to data visualisation, narrative development, coherence checking, and prioritising the remaining steps towards completion of the report.
By the end of the workshop, participants are expected to have:
Built shared ownership across regional nodes in the production of the report
Agreed on core global and regional messages, recommendations, and supporting visualisations
Confirmed the timeline and structure for finalising the Status of Coral Reefs of the World: 2025 report
Strengthening collaboration across the GCRMN network
The workshop will bring together regional coordinators from across the GCRMN’s global network, alongside members of the Editorial Team, reinforcing collaboration and knowledge exchange across regions. This collective approach is central to the GCRMN’s mandate to deliver credible, comparable, and policy-relevant assessments of coral reef status and trends worldwide.
Outcomes from the Bangkok workshop will directly inform the final drafting phase of the Status of Coral Reefs of the World: 2025 report, ensuring it reflects the best available data, shared interpretation, and a clear set of messages at a time of increasing pressure on coral reef ecosystems globally
